Alnico ring magnets are good electrical conductors because of the metallic composition. When rods (diameter smaller than thickness) are being used for open circuit applications the thickness should be approximately 5 times the diameter. However, because alnico magnets are course grained they are hard and brittle and must not be drilled, conventionally machined or used as structural components. Alnico magnets are still commonly used in various industries for specific jobs such as high temperature handling equipment and sensor manufacturing, among others.
